South African by birth, Derek is a philosopher, an aesthete and a bon viveur. His quiet dignity and his grace in social situations made him the natural choice for club chairman. He has performed the role with distinction and, in the unlikely event of the club officers having to stand for re-election, would be certain to remain in office.
He holds a number of batting records for the Mystics, passing 100 runs for the club in 2005. His proudest moments, however, have come as captain of the side. His selflessness and breadth of vision make him an ideal leader of a cricket team whose main reason for turning out of an afternoon is to have something to talk about in the pub that evening.
